Sofia Airport New Runway to Be Completed by the End of October
The deadline for the construction of Sofia Airport new runway has been extended by seven months, by the end of October 2005, Sofia Airport Executive Director Stoil Pashkunov announced.
An illegal garbage dump, unexpectedly located in the middle of a runway under construction, caused the delay.
It took a month to dig out the waste and fill the pit with dirt, Pashkunov said.
The project was initially scheduled to be completed by April 2 this year.
The tender for the construction of a new passenger terminal at Sofia airport remains unchanged, by end-August 2005.
A total of 1,615,000 passengers were served at Sofia Airport last year, up by 300,000 in 2003.
Cargo traffic marked a slower growth - 14,000 tons for 2004, up by 1,000 tons year-upon-year.
Sofia Airport projected its pre-tax profit for 2004 to reach BGN 15 M, up by 1.4 M over the previous year.
